Rigpa Prayer Requests

The Rigpa Prayer Requests service offers all Rigpa members the
opportunity to request prayers or special practices for their friends
and relatives who may be ill, experiencing difficulties, or who have died.

Prayers can also be sponsored for removing obstacles and creating auspicious circumstances. Prayers are performed at Lerab Ling and leading Tibetan Buddhist monasteries in India and the Himalayas.

Offerings

The suggested minimum offering to request prayers for someone
with illness or difficulties is €20, and €40 for someone who has died. Of course, you may choose to offer as much as you are inspired, motivated and able to do so.

By making an offering, a tangible connection is established between the person who is in need of prayers and those who are reciting the prayers on their behalf.

Your donation will be directed to supporting the Lerab Ling practising community, the two monasteries in Nepal where names are sent monthly, and the annual cycle of major practices sponsored by Rigpa.

Three ways to make Prayer Requests

When you request prayers in someone’s name, there are three different ways of making a prayer dedication:

1. Prayers and Practices done in Lerab Ling

The name of your friend or relative will be included in the prayer dedications that are made during the daily practice of the Lerab Ling practising sangha.

If your friend or relative is sick or is facing difficulties, prayers will be dedicated during the daily Tendrel Nyesel tsok practice, twice a week, for three weeks.

If your friend or relative has died, prayers will be dedicated during
the daily Riwo Sangchö practice, once a week, for seven weeks
(49 days).

You may also send us a picture of your friend or relative, together with the reason why practices are being requested, so that it can
be shown to the Lerab Ling practising sangha.

2. Prayers and Practices done in Monasteries in India and Nepal

At regular intervals, the name of your friend or relative will be forwarded to two Tibetan Buddhist monasteries in Nepal:

  • Gön Thubten Do Ngag Shedrub Dargye Ling in Swayambhunath,
the monastery established by the late Tulku Pegyal; as well as
  • Nubri Gompa, a branch monastery of Chorten Gompa, under the direction of Kyabjé Dodrupchen Rinpoche.

Both monasteries share a close connection to Rigpa and regularly dedicate their practice on our behalf. For those who have died, the monasteries will perform Chang Chok and other special practices. (Chang Chok is a ritual purification practice in which a qualified master guides the consciousness of the deceased to a better rebirth).

3. Major Practices done in Tibetan Monasteries

Once a year, all the names sent to us for prayers will be forwarded to a number of different Tibetan monasteries, for dedication during their major prayer gatherings and practice cycles (drupchens). This includes:

  • The Vajrakilaya drupchen at Chorten Gompa, Sikkim, presided
over by Kyabjé Dodrupchen Rinpoche and his community of monks.
  • The Vajrasattva drupchen held at Shechen Monastery, Nepal, presided over by Rabjam Rinpoche and Dilgo Khyentse Yangsi Rinpoche.
  • The Yang Nying Pudri drupchen held at the Namgyal Monastery
    in Dharamsala, India.
  • The Tendrel Nyesel drupchö at Thubten Choling, Nepal, presided over by Kyabjé Trulshik Rinpoche.
  • The Vajrakilaya drupchö at the Sakya Center in Dehra Dun, India, presided over by HH Sakya Trizin.
  • The Chime Phakme Nyingtik drupchen at Chokling Monastery,
Bir, India, presided over by Orgyen Topgyal Rinpoche.
  • The Shinje drupchen held at Tsechu Monastery in Nangchen, Tibet.

Specific Prayer Requests

Rigpa members also have the opportunity to sponsor specific practices for their friends and relatives, at the Chorten Gompa
in Sikkim, India, the two monasteries we support in Nepal, or at
Lerab Ling.

You may already have a clear idea or preference for the specific prayers or practices that you would like to request, in which case
you can consult directly the list below.  Alternatively, you may wish
to seek advice as to which prayers would be the most effective and appropriate to sponsor, in which case we can, on your behalf,
request a divination from Kyabjé Dodrupchen Rinpoche.

The prayers at Lerab Ling are carried out by the monastic and
lay community of practitioners, except for the Phowa and Dukngal Rangdrol practices, which are undertaken by a specialized group.

This group is led by a senior member of Lerab Ling’s monastic community and is composed of experienced practitioners who have received extensive training from Tulku Pegyal Rinpoche, Chagdud Tulku Rinpoche or Chagdud Khandro.
